Directions to El Tenampa
El Tenampa is a tourist hot-spot and revels in its flamboyant décor and wonderful live music. The Salon Tenampa was opened in 1923 by a man born in Jalisco, where mariachis originated in the 19th century. Soon after, El Tenampa became the centre of mariachi activity in Mexico City and local bands left their folk music behind to develop into popular icons.
A huge number of singers of mariachi music have performed at El Tenampa, including Pedro Infante, Vicente Fernandez and Miguel Aceves. Visit El Tenampa and delve into the history of mariachi music by listening to the live music and looking at mariachi icons painted in murals on the walls.
El Tenampa's specialties include: botana tenampa, quesadillas, chicken tacos and guacamole, molcajete with steak, marinated chamorro and pozole hidalgense.
