The place where the Museum of Art of the Ministry of Finance stands on top of what it used to be the pyramid of Tecaztlipoca, the Aztec god of the warriors and the underworld. The first bishop of the Viceroyalty of New Spain picked this place to be his residence. In 1547 he was named archbishop. During the Colonial period, this house was constantly transformed until it reached its majesty and dimensions in the 18th century.
This buildings structure comprises long walkways surrounding the principal yard, with engraved stone pillars and arches. It has two beautiful patios with fountains. Its façade is crowned by inverted arches with pinnacles and lovely balconies. It has an important collection of art oeuvres form the Ministry's program of payment in kind, which allows plastic artists to pay their taxes with their creations.
