Directions to Museo Rufino Tamayo
Located in Chapultepec Park, the Museo Tamayo is a contemporary art gallery housed inside a contemporary building to match. Founded in 1981, it hosts a mixture of international modern artwork and pieces by its founder, Rufino Tamayo - which make up most of its permanent collection. You'll also find work by the likes of Picasso, Fernand Léger and Francis Bacon in the permanent collection. Although now operated by the Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes, the museum was originally built with private funds, making it the first of its kind in Mexico.
Rufino Tamayo, born in Oaxaca in 1899, was a pioneering figure of Mexican art. His work was known to incorporate bold colours and often drew influence from different types of folk art. Over 300 of his works, including paintings and sculptures, are included in the museum's collection. In 2012, the building underwent expansion, and now houses five exhibition halls inside.
